  Astaxanthin, a memeber of the carotenoid family with dark-red color, is one of the most powerful antioxidants found in nature up to date. The research on animals and some human clinical trials has demonstrated that astaxanthin can help to prevent and fight several human diseases,such as UV-light photooxidation, inflammation, cancer, ulcer's Helicobacterpylorii infection, aging and age-related disease. Furthermore, astaxanthin also promotes the immune response, liver function and heart, eye, joint and prostate health.
The greenalga Haematococcus pluvialis is capable of synthesizing and accumulating astaxanthin in larger amount under stress conditions, suggesting it is the best candidate for natural astaxanthin production. In fact, natural astaxanthin is mainly derived from the biomass (powder) of Haematococcus pluvialis.
