The symptoms of human influenza were clearly described by Hippocrates about 2,400 years ago. Influenza reaches peak prevalence in winter, and because the Northern and Southern Hemispheres have winter at different times of the year, there are actually two different flu seasons each year. New influenza viruses are also constantly evolving by mutation or by reassortment. During influenza seasons or when a new virus strain is suspected to emerge, the rapid and accurate laboratory diagnosis plays essential role in minimizing the spread of the disease and reducing infections and number of deaths.
Influenza A virus is a genus of the Orthomyxoviridae family of viruses and includes only one species, which causes influenza in birds and some mammals. Strains of all subtypes of influenza A virus have been isolated from wild birds. Some isolates of influenza A virus cause severe disease both in domestic poultry and, rarely, in humans.
Influenza A viruses are negative sense, single-stranded, segmented RNA viruses. There are several subtypes, labeled according to an H number (for the type of hemagglutinin) and an N number (for the type of neuraminidase). There are 16 different H antigens (H1 to H16) and nine different N antigens (N1 to N9). In June 2009, World Health Organization declared that flu due to a new strain of swine-origin H1N1 was responsible for the 2009 flu pandemic.

H1N1
The new influenza A(H1N1) appears to be as contagious as seasonal influenza, and is spreading fast particularly among young people (from ages 10 to 45). The severity of the disease ranges from very mild symptoms to severe illnesses that can result in death. The majority of people who contract the virus experience the milder disease and recover without antiviral treatment or medical care. Of the more serious cases, more than half of hospitalized people had underlying health conditions or weak immune systems.

Avian influenza
AI is an infectious disease of birds caused by type A strains of the influenza virus (AIV). The disease, first identified in Italy more than 100 years ago, now occurs worldwide. Infection triggers a wide spectrum of symptoms in birds, ranging from mild illnesses to a highly contagious and rapidly fatal disease resulting in severe epidemics.
In the outbreak in Hong Kong in 1997(caused by H5N1-strain of AIV and also called highly pathogenic avian influenza), patients had developed symptoms of fever, sore throat, cough and, in several of the fatal cases, severe respiratory distress secondary to viral pneumonia. Previously healthy adults and children, and some of whom had chronic medical conditions, were affected.
