Swimming crabs are generally covered with a thick&nbsp;exoskeleton, composed primarily of highly mineralized&nbsp;chitin,&nbsp;and armed with a single pair of&nbsp;chelae&nbsp;(claws). Swimming crabs are found in all of the world's oceans, while many swimming crabs live in&nbsp;fresh water&nbsp;and on&nbsp;land, particularly in&nbsp;tropical&nbsp;regions. Swimming crabs vary in size from the&nbsp;pea swimming crab, a few millimetres wide, to the&nbsp;Japanese spider swimming crab, with a leg span of up to 4 metres (13&nbsp;ft).&nbsp;

Other commercially important&nbsp;taxa&nbsp;include&nbsp;Portunus pelagicus, several species in the genus&nbsp;Chionoecetes, the blue swimming crab (Callinectes sapidus),&nbsp;Charybdis&nbsp;spp.,&nbsp;Cancer pagurus, the&nbsp;Dungeness swimming crab(Metacarcinus magister), and&nbsp;Scylla serrata, each of which yields more than 20,000&nbsp;tonnes annually.

In some species, swimming crab meat is harvested by manually twisting and&nbsp;pulling off&nbsp;one or both claws and returning the live swimming crab to the water in the belief the swimming crab will survive and regenerate the claws, thereby making it a sustainable industry.

Swimming crabs&nbsp;evolved from early shrimp, though they do not look like shrimp. Unlike shrimp, their&nbsp;abdomen&nbsp;is small, and they have short&nbsp;antennae&nbsp;and a short&nbsp;carapacethat is wide and flat. They have prominent grasping&nbsp;claws&nbsp;as their front pair of limbs.&nbsp;Swimming crabs&nbsp;are adapted for walking on the seafloor. They have robust legs and usually move about the seafloor by walking sideways. They have pleopods, but they use them as an&nbsp;intromittent organ&nbsp;or to hold egg broods, and not for swimming. Whereas shrimp and lobsters escape predators by&nbsp;lobstering, swimming crabs cling to the seafloor and burrow into sediment. Compared to shrimp and lobsters, the carapace of swimming crabs are particularly heavy, hard and&nbsp;mineralised.
